LCRP Newsletter 10/11/2022
State Issues 1 and 2, which are proposed Ohio Constitutional Amendments, are the most important issues at the top of our 2022 General Election Ballot. I urge all to vote YES on both of them. The following is a summary of both issues
Issue 1 requires courts to consider factors such as public safety when setting the amount of bail, including the seriousness of the offense, as well as a person’s criminal record. The likelihood a person will return to court, and any other factors as prescribed by the Ohio General Assembly. It would remove the requirement that the procedures for establishing the amount and conditions of bail be determined by the Supreme Court of the State of Ohio.
Issue 2 prohibits local governments from allowing non-electors to vote. The proposed amendment requires that only a citizen of the United States, who is at least 18 years of age and who has been a legal resident and registered voter for at least 30 days, can vote at any state or local election held in this state, and prohibits local governments from allowing a person to vote in local elections if they are not legally qualified to vote in state elections.
In both of these amendments, it is the state legislature that writes state law, not the courts, nor local governments.
The role of the Ohio Supreme Court is most important which means that we must elect Justice Sharon Kennedy as our new chief justice and reelect Justices Pat Fisher and Pat DeWine.
